Stump Grinding and Removal
At Woody’s, we specialize in both stump grinding and removal. Some might ask, “Why do I have to get a stump removed?” and “How do you do it?” We’re here to answer those questions!

Our Stump Grinder Services
At Woody’s, we rely on professional-grade stump grinders to handle everything from small backyard stumps to massive root systems.
A stump grinder is a powerful machine equipped with a rotating cutting disc that grinds down tree stumps and roots well below ground level. These machines range in size, from small, portable units to heavy-duty models as large as a truck.
We use two types of stump grinders to accommodate a wide range of jobs:
- Portable Stump Grinder: Perfect for tight spaces and fenced yards, this machine requires just a 36-inch gate or opening for access. It’s ideal for residential areas where maneuverability matters.
- Diesel-Powered Stump Grinder: When space allows, our larger grinder remains attached to our vehicle, delivering maximum power for fast and efficient grinding- even with oversized or deeply rooted stumps.
Both of our machines can grind stumps down to 20 inches below grade, giving you a clean, level surface and preparing your yard for whatever comes next- whether it’s sod, seed, or new landscaping.
FAQs
How does a stump grinder work?
A stump grinder uses a rotating cutting wheel with sharp teeth that chips away at a tree stump. As the wheel spins, it grinds the stump down into mulch-like wood chips, gradually removing the visible part of the stump and grinding below ground level.
How deep do you grind the stump?
At Woody’s, we typically grind stumps 6 to 20 inches below the ground, depending on your needs and future landscaping plans. This depth is ideal for replanting grass, laying sod, or preparing the area for new construction or gardening.
Will stump grinding also remove the roots?
Stump grinding removes the visible portion of the stump and the major root flare, but it does not remove the entire root system. The remaining roots will naturally decompose over time underground and generally won’t cause any problems.
What happens to the wood chips and debris?
Grinding a stump creates a generous amount of wood chips and mulch. You have the option to keep the mulch for your garden or landscaping, or we can haul it away for you for an extra fee – just let us know your preference when scheduling your service.
Can you grind stumps that are close to buildings, fences, or other obstacles?
Yes! We use compact, maneuverable stump grinders that are designed to work in tight spaces.
Is stump grinding safe for my lawn?
Absolutely. Our equipment is operated by trained professionals who take care to protect your property and minimize disruption. To help us work safely and efficiently, please remove any bulbs or plants you want to save near the stump. Also, clear the area of landscape bricks, large rocks, patio furniture, or debris before we arrive.
Do I need to be home during the stump grinding?
Not necessarily. As long as we have clear access to the work area and any needed instructions in advance, you don’t need to be there while we complete the job. Of course, we’re always happy to meet you on-site beforehand if you’d like to go over the details in person.
